Artisan Column by Jen Rubinowitz | 7/31/11

The first live music venue I attended after moving to Texas back in 1990 was the Wylie Opry.  I'm not a hard-core traditional country music fan but the heart and effort the performers put out for the audience from that little stage was very impressive.  They've operated now for twenty-eight years, performing every Saturday night.  When Debra Winger approached me last week about starting an opry-style variety show, I was more than happy to set aside some stage time to see if she can make it work.

So, once or twice a month, depending on interest & participation the Rialto will be bringing it's own "Grand Ole Opry" to the local stage in your hometown.  Auditions are this Saturday, August 6 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Rialto.  She's looking for musicians to form the house band as well as comedians (Minnie Pearl, where are you?), singers, dancers, etc.  You name it, she's looking for it.  Forget "America's Got Talent" and come see what we can do!

Please help us spread the word.  No one else in the area is doing an Opry style show that we're aware of and, coupled with this historic theater (the "pearl of the coastal bend"), it could be the start of something big!  Toss aside your inhibitions, come explore the stage and let your talent run wild!
