Artisan Column by Jen Rubinowitz | 11/1/11

I've spoken before about the artistic temperament and attitudes about "what is art?" This argument has probably been around from the time of the earliest cave drawing. There's a certain degree of art snobbishness that exists to varying degrees and anyone associated with exhibiting art has had to deal with it. With the advent of more affordable access to technology for artists today, the latest argument involves digital manipulation and "is that art?"

Photographers, especially, get a bum rap on a lot of fronts. Because many of us now have "digital darkrooms," we are particularly suspect. Just as we did in the traditional darkroom, we do color corrections, dodging, cropping, etc. but without the toxic chemicals. Many shows and competitions won't allow photographic art to enter at all. I'm biased, but I always wonder about someone who can spend years working on a painting but can't respect a photographer who has a nano-second to capture an image.

Luckily, Aransas Pass print-maker, photographer and all-around-good-guy Gary Hansen doesn't worry about all this. He just makes great art. His photography is full of character and interest, many of them showcasing our local natural beauty that we all know and love. He creates in his home studio and exhibits at shows like the annual Tarpon Inn show that benefits Art Center for the Islands. He currently exhibits his work there and at the Rialto Theater. He's also a great excuse to shop local while supporting our artists in the weeks ahead!
